Wal-Mart chooses
Geddis as its teacher of the year
May 13, 2004 La'Mont Geddis, 30, has been chosen as Teacher of the Year by Wal-Mart in Bowie. Geddis is the Technology Coordinator at Ernest Everett Just Middle School in Mitchellville. A graduate of Howard University, Geddis began teaching right after graduation. He has been a member of Just's faculty for the past two years. In addition to the Technology Club, he is also the director of the Drama Club as well as the sponsor for the Gentlemen's Association at the school. Geddis was nominated by the school's principal, Dr. Marian Whitehood. Geddis has earned $1,000 for his school and the chance to apply for Teacher of the Year at the state and national level. "I love working with kids and watching them flourish. That is so rewarding to me," said Geddis. The Teacher of the Year program is implemented in Wal-Mart stores across the country and has been in place since 1995.
Award-winning parents Louis and Paulette Thomas of Largo are the recipients of the Prince George's County Outstanding Foster Parent Award. The two were honored at the second annual Regional Foster Parent Appreciation Gala on May 1 by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. "Paulette is a mother who has always taken on the responsibility of providing for her children with the love, dignity and character they need to build self-esteem," said Kierra Coleman of Upper Marlboro, one of the foster children of the Thomases. They have been foster parents for the past 17 years. "There are so many kids in need for a mommy and daddy and a home and love," said Paulette Thomas. Breaking convention First Pentecostal Church of Deliverance will be hosting its 22nd Annual Women's Convention starting today and ending on May 15. The theme of this year's convention is "Breaking the Alabaster Box" which comes from a Bible scripture, Mark 14:3-9. The registration fee for the conference is $25 and the Saturday Prayer Breakfast is $25. The conference will be held at the Best Western Hotel-Capitol Beltway. Etiquette Camp The Charmique Charm School in Largo is accepting applications for its July summer camp sessions. The session is geared towards 7-to 17-year olds who wish to partake in academic enrichment, character education and leadership skills. The camp sessions will run in three-week intervals from July 5 to July 23. Early registration is suggested. Charmique is in need of modeling, etiquette, French/Spanish, and acting teacher/instructors for the camp and other programs. Academic award Stephanie Thornton of Lanham has received an Academic Excellence Award for study at Frostburg State University. Thornton is a graduating senior at Parkdale High School in Riverdale. She plans on studying journalism and is currently a member of the swimming and ice-skating teams at Parkdale. Thornton is the daughter of Jeffrey and Janet Thornton. Gospel song Esi Abban is a member of this year's Salisbury University Gospel Choir. Abban, from Greenbelt, is studying respiratory therapy as a sophomore. In addition to the choir, she is a member of the Salisbury University chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and Brothers and Sisters in Christ (BASIC) Abban graduated from DuVal High School in Lanham in 2001. She is the daughter of Kwame Abban and Esther Dadzie. Living prom The Prince George's Community College's College for Living students will be having their prom on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. The theme is "City of Lights". The prom celebrates the completion of the student's computer-assisted course curriculum. The College for Living students are developmentally disabled adults. The prom will take place in the Student Lounge in the Largo Student Center on the college's main campus. Prince George's Community College is located at 301 Largo Road in Largo.
