Keeping

What Black America is talking about...or should be.

R. Kelly and the Image
Awards
When I
first heard that R. Kelly was nominated for a NAACP Image
Award, I thought it was a joke. Sorta like Mike Tyson
being a judge at the Miss America Pageant or George Bush
winning the Nobel Peace Prize. The extreme irony makes
such thoughts humorous to say the least...more
Pimp
Juice and Ghettopoly
There are
some that are calling for the boycotting of the products
"Pimp Juice" and "Ghettopoly"
on the basis that they are promoting negative stereotypes of the Black
Community. While those arguments hold lots of merit, what about the countless
other examples of negative, unhealthy or anti-social behaviors that we see
promoted in every medium...more
The
culture of the week
Why is it that I am seeing so many Black people with Asian symbols on their
clothing and bodies. Several NBA stars have been seen sporting a tattoo with
Asian symbols. I was in a restaurant the other day and I my server had "her

United
We Stand?
On
October 25 and 26, 2001, two white fraternities at Auburn
University (Alabama) hosted Halloween parties. During the

with rifles; a lynching victim in blackface with a noose tied
around his neck; and blackface members of Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity with afro wigs, camouflage pants, and gold
jewelry. A confederate flag hung in the background.

origin. This story was sent to me by one of our readers...more

Vote
For
years many Black politicians and activists have lamented at
the dismal level of voter participation in the African
American community. They issued dire warnings about what would
happen if we didn't take the right and responsibility
seriously. There were predictions that efforts would be
made to once again deny Blacks the right to vote. Well,
it appears that "the chickens have come home to
roost". Years of Black voter apathy have apparently given
some whites the mistaken notion that we don't care about our
votes....more
The Self
Destruction of Black America
For those of you that may not know, I live and work in the
heart of Washington, DC. Not the Washington that you see in
the movies or on TV. But the parts of Washington that worry
less about a terrorist attack than we do about some crack-head
trying to rob us or getting shot by a stray bullet meant for a
rival dealer or to settle a "beef" between neighborhood gangs
or crews. Every day I see aimless men and women gather on the
corner or in the alley. Their eyes are devoid of any sense of
pride or self respect....more
